On Monday, 26th August 2024, ACISS was hosted at the Horley Leisure Centre for an exhilarating afternoon filled with diverse activities and sports. The event was organised to foster community engagement and promote health and fitness within the local population, with a particular focus on celebrating and connecting the African Community in Surrey & Sussex [ACISS].

The event led by Shanka Popoola, offered something for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level. From traditional games to modern sports, the variety ensured that all attendees could participate and enjoy themselves. The traditional Ayo board game, a favourite in many African cultures, drew in participants eager to showcase their strategic skills. Nearby, tables buzzed with the sound of chess pieces clicking and table tennis balls bouncing as friendly competitions heated up.

Children were not left out, with a large bouncing castle providing endless fun. Laughter filled the air as kids leapt and tumbled in joyful abandon. For those with a passion for football, the open afternoon also featured football games, bringing together teams of all ages for lively matches that highlighted both skill and camaraderie.

In addition to these, body-enhancing exercise sessions were held throughout the afternoon. These sessions catered to various fitness levels and included a mix of aerobics, stretching, and strength-building exercises, led by experienced trainers.

The organizers at the end of the event appreciated Alexandra Chung and Mike Croke for making the centre available.

ACISS played a central role, bringing together individuals from different backgrounds in a spirit of unity and shared enjoyment as different flags of African countries were displayed as the event played on. In line with the event’s focus on promoting health and wellbeing.
